Trees, like people, take time to recover from wounds. This birdhouse is a tribute to the healing process & the beauty it reveals. The name is derived from the roof alluding to a Colonial style architecture that originated in New England.

The Saltbox:
Many years ago a damaged dogwood limb began Nature's healing process. Healing is a routine people also experience. The tree was progressing to cover up some kind of infliction that left behind a scar only to be mended by time, a proven element for recovery. It is much easier to see this process taking place in wood as apposed to people. Both take years of effort. Yet in either specie, with God's help, good friends, and self-resolution, healing can ultimately produce something very beautiful! In the dogwood I saw this beauty captured like a snapshot from time. With tribute to the healing process, I used this piece of damaged dogwood to adorn the entrance of this birdhouse design. Two cedar wood hearts have been attached just below the entry of the nesting box to symbolize rebirth, renewal, and Nature's cycle of hope for things to come. A new beginning was in progress of being established.
The structure's name is based on the roof design. When finished, the roof structure simulated the classic "saltbox" style of an early New England house with resemblance to a wooden lidded box where salt was kept. The roof construction consists of old growth poplar wood bark with pine cone petals appearing as an overgrowth forming an unbalanced aspect to the piece. Wrapping the bark and base pine wood with the pine cone petals render a unique dimension and character to the solidly constructed design of the piece.
Practically all of my birdhouses are based on a traditional A-frame pattern that I developed over forty years ago by working with some of the children in my life. Beneath the decorated structure is the original one by six reclaimed lumber base pattern that I used to build birdhouses with my niece and nephews when they were small. All cuts on this design are straight lines so that children can make this basic birdhouse. The outside surface has been covered with pine cone petals that are individually and permanently fastened into place.
Although The Saltbox may well be used as an indoor, covered patio/deck, or for a sun room décor accessory, it is in every aspect a functional outdoor birdhouse. It has been coated with a marine spar varnish for water resistance, then covered with a two part epoxy finish using a UV resistant clear liquid epoxy poured over the birdhouse surfaces, therein encapsulating the structure for impact resistance, limited solar protection, and finished for outdoor life. The house must be mounted from the bottom, and no stand is included with this work. If mounted outside, I rec0mmend the piece not to be placed in direct sunlight, but mounted where it will receive softer indirect sun as well as with some weather protection. This is a very versatile piece designed to give either your indoor or outdoor living space many years of pleasure and reflection.
All of my one of a kind art structures come affixed with a discretely placed brass plate designating the artwork as an original. A letter of authenticity also accompanies the purchased piece.
Thank you for visiting my store.
