Description of “A Feather in a Wild Cherry Root”:
This birdhouse has been fashioned around a wild cherry root that I unearthed in the wooded area close by my home in Belmont, NC. The wild cherry tree had long since died away and all I saw was a sunken area where the rotting stump had begun to fill in the disintegrating root ball of the tree. Curiously, I dug up the buried stump. I found remaining segments of hard cherry wood still there. Twisting through the natural complex of underground roots of this wild cherry tree, a cavity had developed that took very little imagination to see familiar characteristics of feather designs. Further examination and cleaning of the root wood revealed other inherent feather attributes elsewhere. I placed an entry hole at a natural bend in the most predominant "feather" and carved in the vanes and feather shaft up to the quill. Other smaller features were brought out elsewhere to illustrate how closely nature was beginning to simulate its own plumage clusters. To maintain acceptable proportions for a song bird nesting area, the entry required an off-center position that added to the uniqueness of the final piece. At the apex of the root front I polished a section of the wood that shows the beauty of fine crafted cherry wood. (Look closely and you will discover where Nature left what looks to be a “thumbprint” in the polished wood grain!) I wrapped the piece with North Carolina long leaf pine cone parts and encapsulated the surface with a thick sealant so the piece can withstand outdoor use . This piece is a rare beauty. While I always try to make my birdhouse art to be functional birdhouses, this one would make an excellent accent piece for a den or sun porch.
